Loyd Bell honored
Friends of San Angelo State Park
Loyd Bell is Senior Citizen of the Year

Loyd Bell was named Senior Citizen of the Year. The honor, sponsored by San Angelo Rotary Clubs and
the Standard Times, was bestowed recently as part of Night in Old San Angelo.

Loyd received four nominations for the first annual award to a senior “for exemplifying Service above
Self”. Loyd’s service to San Angelo State Park covers over forty years, starting in the 1960s when the
area was under the auspices of the US Corp of Engineers. He has done everything from plumbing to
giving VIP tours. He has trimmed trees, done random maintenance work and served on the Board of
Directors and Vice-President of FoSASP.

In 2002, he facilitated the creation of ‘Bell’s Point”, a location in the park where one can “pause, reflect
and..leave at peace with God, man and nature”. In 2006, he constructed ‘The Old Rugged Cross” on
property that he owns adjacent to the park. The 26-foot cross is visible from most of the park and near
the trail used by hikers, bikers and equestrians.

Loyd has assisted park managers John Culbertson and Kurt Kemp in many public relations activities and
has been, along with his wife Martha, a tireless volunteer at FoSASP events.

The award includes $2,500 donation to a non-profit organization of his choice and a weekend get-away
trip to the Log Cottage on the Pedernales River near Fredericksberg, Texas.
