Delbert Tarter Selected for Honorary Friend Status

Delbert Tarter was designated Honorary Member of Friends of San Angelo State Park. Tarter has been a
regular contributor of bird-watching articles to this quarterly newsletter for nine years. His articles give
readers in-depth information on bird species that inhabit the park or are seen there during their migrations.
He compiled a “Checklist for Birds in SASP”, the list, in booklet form, is available free at the gatehouse.

The Friends of SASP and birders in the Concho Valley are grateful to Tarter for his time and commitment to
sharing the fun of birding with so many people. Tarter has been influential in encouraging use of the park’s
habitat by birdwatchers, both local and visiting. He maintains a checklist at the San Angelo Visitor Center
containing color pictures of the Concho Valley Birds. His “Checklist for Birds of the Concho Valley” was
compiled in 1986 and the Sixth Revision was published in 2006.

“My interest in birds began when I was in high school,” he stated. Tarter and his wife, Margaret, have
“birded” all over North America. Tarter retired after 35 years as chemistry professor at ASU with a long list of
honors and awards. He continues to teach bird identification classes and assists with bird banding efforts in
the Concho Valley area. He will be presenting seminars at the Nature Center beginning Feb. 27.
